White Pencil Skirt Biography:

A White pencil skirt is a slim-fitting skirt with a straight, narrow cut. Generally the hem falls to, or just below, the knee and is tailored for a close fit. It is named for its shape: long and slim like a pencil.
The White pencil skirt is usually worn either as a separate piece of clothing or as part of a suit. The slim, narrow shape of a pencil skirt can restrict the movement of the wearer so pencil skirts often have a slit at the back, or less commonly at the sides. Sometimes a pleat, which exposes less skin, is used instead of a slit. The classic shoes for wearing with a pencil skirt are high heels, with sheer stockings or tights. Back-seamed hosiery matches well, recalling the classic pencil-skirt era of the 1950s.
Narrow-fitting skirts have a long history in western fashion. The predecessor to the pencil skirt is the hobble skirt, a pre-WWI fad inspired by the Ballets Russes. This full-length skirt with a narrow hem seriously impeded walking.
The French designer Christian Dior introduced the classic modern pencil skirt in the late 1940s, using the term H-line to describe its shape. It is in stark contrast to Dior's full-skirted New Look in his "A-line".
The pencil skirt quickly became very popular, particularly for office wear. This success was due to women's desire for new fashions in the wake of Second World War and Cold War rationing, coupled with the austere economic climate, when fabrics were expensive.
A White pencil skirt is perfect for wearing at work during the day because it’s smart without being too sexy and it will allow people to take you seriously; sharp tailoring always demands the utmost respect. For a formal look, team your fitted pencil skirt with a matching jacket for a strong tailored look. Tights or stockings are essential so make sure you invest in a pair of black opaques or sheer flesh-toned tights. To dress the pencil skirt down for the day then team with a loose silk blouse tucked into the skirt and a pair of mid-heeled courts. You can even wear flats with a pencil skirt but this works better if the length of the skirt finishes just below the knee and not any longer as otherwise it can look a little frumpy.
A White  pencil skirt is a great look for the evening time as it’s sexy and sassy enough to wear in a restaurant or club. Team a tight-fitting pencil skirt with a pair of killer heels. Stilettos work best as wedges can create too much bulk. For an informal look tuck a loose fitting cotton vest into the skirt and fasten with a belt and for something a little formal opt for a satin blouse.
The White Pencil skirt.
The White pencil skirt feels different from looser skirts, and can take some adjustment by the wearer in terms of movement and posture in order to manage it successfully. Walking needs to be done in short strides; entering and leaving a car gracefully takes practice; and when sitting the legs are held close together which some find restrictive (though others like the feeling of their legs being "hugged" by the skirt). Activities such as climbing ladders and riding bicycles can be very difficult in a pencil skirt. The pencil skirt is warmer due to the reduced ventilation, and is less likely to be blown up by gusts of wind.
The white pencil skirt started its life around the 1940s after taking inspiration from the ‘hobble’ skirt in the 1900s.
It all started with a lady called Mrs. Hart O. Berg who asked Wilbur Wright if he could demonstrate the Wright Flyer to her and thus became the first American female passenger in history. Whilst on the plane Mrs. Hart O. Berg tied a length of rope around her long skirt below her knees presumably to preserve her ‘decency’ during the flight. When French designer Paul Poiret saw her ‘hobble’ off the plane he was inspired by the way she moved and designed the very first ‘hobble’ skirt which remained popular for many years after. In fact many women even wore knee-length corsets underneath their skirts just simply to create this ‘hobble’ effect which obviously made walking properly a very difficult task and the fashion soon faded.
