SEQUIN PENCIL SKIRT
For today’s Go To Sew Mystery Box challenge project, I tackled the sequins!
And made a skirt…
Of course it’s a pencil skirt…my favorite type of skirt ever. :)
And look at this fabric!…oooh preeety. The little girl in me squealed with happiness when I saw this in the mystery box.
The sequin fabric is actually knit which simplified things for this skirt quite nicely.
I just used my knit pencil skirt tutorial, found HERE, and used the 2 inch wide elastic (also in the mystery box) for the waistband. I used the first waistband method listed in the tutorial which has you tuck the elastic under for a seamless look.
I was hesitant to put the sequins through my serger. It is pretty rough to cut and sew. So, I stuck with a zig zag stitch and sewed s l o w , which worked well.
The fabric shed like nobody’s business, but it seemed to mostly stay intact despite all the shedding. A few bigger chunks of sequins came off during the sewing part which I easily hand sewed back on with invisible thread.
Because I already knew my measurements for the knit skirt and there was no hemming (not needed or desired even), this project took me 15 minutes tops!
Gotta love that.
I suppose I could have added a lining to it, because it is a bit see through up close, but I simply wore a black slip underneath and called it good.
After all, as much fun as it is, I probably won’t wear it more than a few times.
But it IS really fun to wear. :)
I wore it to my brother’s wedding banquet in Hong Kong in fact.
It fit right in with all those shiny buildings. :)
It was hard to find a top to go with this skirt, but I finally found a chiffon blouse at a small shop in Hong Kong that worked (almost) perfect. It is a blouse with a lot of body at the bottom, so when tucked in, it bulges at the waist a bit. Unfortunately the sequin fabric emphasized that. I promise you I sucked it in almost the whole night. :) ha…
I also shed little bits of sequins wherever I went. Not near as much as when I was sewing it, but I left a couple of little tokens to remember me by wherever I sat. :)
Andrea, the mastermind behind Go To Sew and this mystery box challenge, sourced this fabric from the LA Fabric District, but I found similar stuff here on Ebay. (I am not sure how long that link will be good since it’s Ebay)
I have plans to wear this skirt to at least one more event. I might dress it down with a t-shirt and sneakers. Can you guess which conference I plan to wear it to?
